Quiet Loner is based around the vocals and songwriting of Matt Hill along with Alan Cook, one of the UK's premier league pedal steel guitarists, with occasional appearances from multi-instrumentalist twins Mike and Dave Harries. They have toured extensively across the UK and have opened shows for artists like Lambchop, Joe Pernice, Neal Casal, Chris Mills, Richard Buckner and Josh Rouse. Their debut album "secret ruler of the world", released in 2004, was acclaimed by critics for being a distinctly British take on alternative country.
