Quiet Loner sings songs about love, loss, infidelity, suicide, attempted murder, capital punishment, the database state, terrorism, religion, war, fallen angels, the secret rulers of the world and the redemptive power of country music.

The debut album "secret ruler of the world", released in 2004, was acclaimed by critics for being a distinctly British take on alternative country. The album reached number one on the UK's americana chart and received radio play throughout the UK and Europe. It was voted album of the year by Americana-uk.com. QL has toured extensively across the UK opening shows for artists like Lambchop, Joe Pernice, Neal Casal, Chris Mills, Richard Buckner and Josh Rouse.

Quiet Loner is based around the vocals and songwriting of Matt Hill who plays alone or with Alan Cook, one of the UK's premier league pedal steel guitarists.
